September is the busiest hiring season of the year for supply teachers. Schools come back with gaps to fill, and the teachers who are prepared tend to be the ones they turn to first.
The good news? It’s July. You have time to get set up properly. Here’s how to walk into the new academic year ready to work and quietly confident.
Why September is your biggest opportunity
The autumn term starts early. Most schools in England hold staff training days on 1 and 2 September 2026, so pupils are usually back by Wednesday 3rd.
That first fortnight is a busy one for schools. Staff move on over summer, timetables shift, and unexpected absences appear. Cover is needed, and needed often.
Schools plan for this well ahead. Many begin lining up September support through agencies as early as June. The sooner you are registered and ready, the sooner your name is in front of them.
Step 1: Get registered and cleared early
The single most useful thing you can do is complete your compliance checks before term starts.
References, right-to-work documents, and an enhanced DBS all take time to process. Schools go quiet over the holidays, so references can be slow to come back. Getting this done across July and August means you are ready to work from day one.
If you already hold a DBS on the update service, even better. Bring the details when you register.
At Edvantro, we guide you through every check and keep things moving, so paperwork isn’t what holds you back.
Step 2: Get your documents in one place
Nothing slows a placement down like a missing document. Save yourself the stress and gather everything now.
Keep a folder with your ID, proof of address, DBS certificate, QTS details, and your teaching references. Store digital copies on your phone too.
When a school is looking for someone, the teacher whose paperwork is in order is the easy choice.
Step 3: Be clear about what you want
The more your agency knows, the better the match. Vague availability tends to lead to vague offers.
Before term starts, settle a few things. Which phase suits you, primary or secondary? Which subjects or year groups do you enjoy? How far will you travel, and which days can you work?
Tell us your ideal week, and tell us your dealbreakers. It is far easier to find the right fit when we know what “right” looks like for you.
Step 4: Pack a supply go-bag
Day-to-day supply means new schools, short notice, and early starts. A ready-to-go bag takes the panic out of the morning.
A good go-bag holds a few classroom basics: pens, a whiteboard marker, a notebook, and a water bottle. Add a small set of time-filler activities that work with any class. A word game, a quick quiz, or a short reading task can rescue a tricky final ten minutes.
Lay your outfit out the night before. When the phone rings early, you want to be out the door, not hunting for a lanyard.
Step 5: Make the first day one they remember
Here is the heart of steady supply work: schools rebook the teachers they trust. Your first day is your interview for the next fifty.
Arrive in good time, introduce yourself at the office, and ask where you are needed. Follow the cover work that has been left, keep the classroom calm, and leave a short note for the class teacher on how the day went.
Small things get remembered. A tidy room, a positive tone, and a well-managed class are exactly what a school asks for again. Do the day well, and become the name they request.
Step 6: Stay flexible in those first weeks
Early autumn is when relationships are built. Saying yes to a range of schools helps you find the ones you click with.
You do not have to take everything forever. But a broad start gives you options, builds your reputation, and often leads to a longer placement you will love. Keep your phone on and your answers quick, especially in the first fortnight.
A simple timeline to be September-ready
If you would like a plan to work back from, here it is:
- Now (July): Register with your agency and begin your compliance checks.
- August: Confirm your references and DBS are clear. Sort your document folder and pack your go-bag.
- Late August: Confirm your availability and preferences, and make sure we can reach you.
- First week of September: Show up early, do the day well, and start building the relationships that carry your term.
